2008 – Simon Mallett

SimonMallettSimon Mallett is a Calgary based director, playwright and theatre-maker and the founder and Artistic Producer of Downstage, a theatre company dedicated to creating, producing and presenting “Provocative Canadian Performance”, work by Canadian artists that engages with socially and politically-charged themes.

His previous directing credits with Downstage include “A Line in the Sand,” “Heaven,” “pppeeeaaaccceee,” “Habitat,” and the World Premiere of Sharon Pollock’ s “Man Out of Joint.” He has also directed every show by Downstage’s Dog from the Machine performance creation ensemble since its inception in 2004.

His work as a playwright includes “Jack of Hearts,” “Cowtown,” “Arpillera” and the award-winning “Pulling the Wool” among others. Simon has worked with many of Calgary’ s professional theatre companies including Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Lunchbox Theatre, Sage Theatre and others.

First drawn to the theatre through his work as a professional magician, Simon has since trained extensively in various theatrical disciplines.

He holds a Masters in Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Calgary, an Honours BA in Drama from the University of Guelph and he has studied voice and movement at The Academy at The Stratford Festival.
