City of Lethbridge to host 2015 Distinguished Artist Awards

An exquisite hand-blown glass vase stood in for a torch as Red Deer Mayor Morris Flewwelling passed responsibility for the 2015 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards over to Lethbridge Deputy Mayor Tom Wickersham.

Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation Chair, Phil Ponting, announced that Lethbridge had been chosen for the honour at the 2013 gala dinner in Red Deer, which recognized 2013 Distinguished Artists writer Aritha van Herk and the founders of the Old Trout Puppet Workshop: Judd Palmer, Pityu Kenderes and Peter Balkwill.

“Three outstanding communities submitted proposals to host the awards,” said Ponting. “I visited each community and was just amazed at the depth of the passion for the arts here in Alberta. It was a difficult choice, but Lethbridge has a wonderful vision for the event and the legacy they will build around it. Red Deer has set the bar high for them, so we’re looking forward to 2015.”

Lethbridge will be the sixth Alberta city to host the awards since their inception in 2003. Every two years, the Foundation honours Distinguished Artists with awards of $30,000. In alternate years, $10,000 Emerging Artist Awards are given.
